Camper FAQ

What are the cabins like?

They are rustic log-style cabins that were designed in the early 1930s, and are really neat today.   Most of the cabins are alike, and have three bedrooms (called chalets), a large center room and a bathroom right in the cabin.  The bedrooms sleep 5 to 8 campers with cubby areas for clothes and a traditional “green shelf” by your bed that holds lots of stuff.    The large center room is like a living room for the cabin and it has a traditional wood burning fireplace, a great place where cabin meetings and fun cabin events take place.   As mentioned, bathrooms are located inside the cabin with toilets and wash basins.  Hot water showers and bathrooms are located within walking distance.

Can I bring items from home to make my sleeping room my own?
Absolutely!  Pictures and appropriate posters are all acceptable to bring from home to make your sleeping space your own.

How’s the food?

Pretty good, as we focus on child friendly meals.  Breakfast includes a hot entree and a cereal bar. At lunch and dinner we have a salad bar available as well as a hot entree.  And for picky eaters, there is always the option of peanut butter and jelly, in addition to a healthy salad bar available for every lunch and dinner.  At most meals we serve water, milk, and juice.  A healthy snack is provided each day at each camp in either the late afternoon or evening.  We also have a weekly cabin cookout, special meals and fun field meals on special days.  Some of the special meals and treats include: “Make Your own Pizza Nights,” s’mores at campfires or taco bar.  Every week campers will also get to enjoy a “Lazy Breakfast,” which includes a hot breakfast buffet and yummy pastries.

Please note:  Camp does offer vegetarian option.

Occasionally, campers will also be able to visit our “Pop and Candy Shop” throughout the session.

Is there a dress code?

We are a non-uniform camp.  We usually recommend comfortable and functional clothing and being prepared for Minnesota’s diverse weather.    At Camp Lake Hubert, for Chapel Service on Sunday morning’s campers dress in all white.  During Special Day activities, campers may dress up for a variety of theme days, which are announced in the Spring Railsplitter, so you are able to prepare in advance.  We also have an on-site camp store if you would like to purchase limited logo’d items while at camp.  If you would like to purchase logo’d items before camp, you can visit our online store by clicking here.

All clothing at camp must be camp appropriate.

Laundry services will be provided twice during a four-week session for our Session 1 & 2 campers.  Please note:  Prep , Coed or Specialty Campers do not have laundry done, unless needed.

Are there trips and how do we sign up for them?

Yes! We do offer adventure and wilderness trips of all kinds! There are hiking, canoeing, sea kayaking, climbing, sailing and backpacking trips. You will be able to sign up for these trips once you arrive at camp. At Camp Lake Hubert, trips usually last three days and two nights, and at Camp Lincoln trips vary in length from an overnight trip to week-long trips. Popular destinations for trips include: Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Gooseberry Falls, Tettejuche State Park, Jay Cook State Park the Apostle Islands and many of Minnesota’s popular river waterways.

Will I be the only new camper in my cabin?

No, you will not be the only new camper in your cabin.  We have both new and returning campers in each age group and cabin.  Besides having campers from different states and countries, a good mix of new and returning campers also helps keep the camp population diverse.

Can I bring my cell phone, game boy or iPod?

Camp is a place to celebrate and enjoy the great outdoors and take a break from the electronic connection of everyday life.  For this reason, we are an “unplugged” camp.  You may travel with all of your electronic devices, but once at camp we ask that you turn them in for safe keeping in the camp office.  At the end of each session cellular phones will be charged and returned for the trip home.

Within the cabin, we do allow non-video modeled CD/MP3 players and iPods.

But, we ask that you do not bring your own stereos/boom boxes with you, as an issue of respect for others in cabin.

If I come to camp with a friend from home will we be in the same cabin?

Campers of the same age and grade who request to be with each other, may be placed in the same cabin, though maybe in separate sleeping rooms within the cabin. What you will want to do is make sure that both you and your friend fill out a cabin mate request on the Contact Form.  Please make sure to make this request BEFORE coming to camp.  We will do our absolute best to honor your request.

Can I call home while I am at camp?

You will be able to call home upon your arrival at camp to let you parents know that you have arrived safely.  During the rest of the session, you will communicate with your parents through letters, so make sure to bring your favorite stationary and stamps.  Your parents will also be able to send you letters and one-way emails through Bunk1.

Bunk1 is a service link on our website where parents can log onto and send you electronic emails during your camp stay.   The camp also will be uploading lots of photos during the camp session and your parents can look for you and your cabin mates in the photos.  So make sure that you are smiling when the photographer shows up at your activity.

What are Special Days and how do I prepare for them?

For variety and fun, every week we designate one day as a Special Day, which is different than a typical  activity day at camp.  The Special Day usually has a theme and campers and staff often dress up for the   theme and participate in different games, events and activities throughout the day.

Special Days will be announced in the Spring Railsplitter.

How do I stay in contact with my camp friends?

At the end of each session, we will provide names and addresses of the campers in your cabin, so that you can keep in touch if you wish. You can also connect with your camp friends by writing them a letter and sending it to the camp office. We will then forward it on to them for you.
