One day a week, campers and staff enjoy what are known as “Special Days.” These Special Days are a break from our daily activity program and add excitement, variety and festivities to camp life. Special Days are an entire day of exciting and new activities centered around a common theme such as Olympics Day, Reality TV Day, Color Wars or Carnival Day. Campers are often teamed with campers from other cabins, forming new bonds of friendship and giving older campers the opportunity to develop leadership skills. Many Special Days end with an all-camp campfire, complete with skits, camp songs and storytelling.
We know that many brothers and sisters attend camp at the same time. Because most of our sessions are single gender focused and the camps are actually across the lake from each other, siblings do not get to see each other. So that siblings can get together to share “camp talk” and to visit, we do offer a Sibling Luncheon for two and four week campers. These days are planned in the calendar and provide a brief time for siblings to get together over lunch and rest hour. Cousins and other relations are not included.
During each four week session an evening program dance is scheduled for current 7th through 9th grade boys and girls. This traditional event provides the opportunity for the older campers to come together for a controlled social event that usually includes a dance (with a theme) and other appropriate social interactions. The Camp Lincoln Leadership Training (LT) Level 1 Participants usually DJ the dance and the camp directors and staff fully supervise the event.
The Fourth of July is a very special day at Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert. Following celebrations at each camp, Campers from Camp Lake Hubert join the Camp Lincoln Community on the Athletic Field for a private fireworks display, lasting approximately 15 minutes with a spectacular grand finale!
Color Wars is a tradition at both camps that was revived a number of years ago and based on the writings of the camp founders. At Camp Lake Hubert, the girls are assigned to either the Green or White Team, with two senior campers selected as captains for each team. At Camp Lincoln, teams are divided into the Blue Team and the Red Team, with one senior camper selected as Team Captain for each color. At Lincoln, once a camper is assigned a team, they will forever be on their respective team, as will siblings and children who follow them to Camp Lincoln. Younger siblings are automatically assigned to their family color. Throughout the day, teams compete in various activities to gain an edge in the all-camp relay race at the end of Color Wars. During the all-camp relay race, every camper has a role as the race winds throughout the various areas and activities of camp. The race ends with the Team Captains racing to build a campfire with a rope stretched across the fire-pit. The first team to burn through the rope, wins. It is great fun for all.
Birthdays are also very special days at Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert. Campers and Staff with a birthday during camp are treated to the camp version of the Birthday Song at meal time in addition to a special birthday cake, baked and decorated just for them. Campers then share their cake with their cabin for dessert! Everyone loves having a birthday camper in their cabin.
