You might think it difficult to imagine summers on the shores of Lake Hubert while living in the middle of December in the Twin Cities. But as I write this, camp just keeps coming to mind. Yesterday’s rain was falling lightly on the pine trees outside, and I couldn’t stop singing Blue Sky out loud as I walk from place to place, preparing for the coming holidays. Over the last few days, I’ve had the good fortune of speaking with a couple campers, which made the dreary end-of-fall days feel like warm sunny days on Lake Hubert. We talked about sailing and riding and climbing to the top of the wall where you can see over the pine trees for miles. We laughed about…well I don’t remember exactly what we laughed about, but we laughed a lot, and when I hung up the phone I felt reconnected to camp, the place and camp, the people. It’s that place we call home during the summer and how we feel when we’re with those people we call BFFs and CFABs.
For me, the pine tree is a sign of the celebrations and gathering of people together. In December it brings the hope of joy and peace around the world. It brings songs to mind and people are more generous in spirit then perhaps during the rest of the year. And in the summer, the pine tree is again a sign of celebrations, of a different sort. It is when we are gathered beneath the pines that we share our deepest dreams and hopes and joys. We come from around the world and we learn to be more patient and more generous of spirit. We sing in a whisper and we sing at the top of our lungs. We celebrate achievement and we celebrate personal growth. It is at camp we feel most connected and most celebrated.
My wish for you and your family and BFFs in the coming weeks is a time of celebration, of connection, and of peace and hope and dreams come true. The very warmest of wishes to you in this joyous season, from me and from all of us at Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert.
