When you send your child to Camp Lincoln or Camp Lake Hubert, you're not just signing them up for sunshine and s'mores (though there's plenty of that, too). Behind the scenes—long before the first camper sets foot on our beautiful grounds—our seasonal staff are hard at work preparing to be the best mentors, activity leaders, and role models they can be.

How Summer Camp Staff Training Starts Before Campers Arrive

Each summer, our staff undergo a comprehensive 10-day orientation designed to prepare them for every aspect of the residential camp experience. This isn't your average crash course. Our summer camp staff training digs deep into what it means to be a leader in a community living environment.

Staff learn to support homesick campers, uphold healthy boundaries, understand consent, and take on the responsibilities of being a trusted caregiver. More than just a checklist, this training is a commitment to the safety, development, and joy of every child.

A 10-Day Camp Counselor Training That Goes Beyond the Basics

At the heart of our orientation is a robust focus on camper well-being. Emergency procedures, mental health awareness, and child safety protocols form the foundation of our curriculum. Every team member becomes certified in First Aid and CPR through the American Heart Association, ensuring they're fully prepared to handle the unexpected.

We believe that empowering staff with confidence and clarity sets the tone for a successful summer, both in and out of the cabin.

Summer Camp Safety Protocols and Certifications That Keep Kids Protected

Safety is non-negotiable at Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert. Our training aligns with the highest industry standards, including those established by the American Camp Association (ACA) and the Minnesota Department of Health. Staff are thoroughly trained in supervision, emergency response, and real-life camp scenarios—so when challenges arise, they know exactly how to respond.

This emphasis on proactive planning and expert-led safety training ensures a secure and enriching environment for every camper.

Activity-Specific Training Led by Certified Camp Instructors

Beyond general orientation, we elevate our preparation with activity-specific training led by certified professionals. These hands-on sessions ensure that staff aren't just knowledgeable—they're competent and confident in delivering high-quality programming.

  • Some of our standout specialty trainings include:
  • High and Low Ropes Course Certification
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training
  • Horseback Riding Instruction and Barn Safety
  • Waterski and Wakeboarding Instruction
  • Sailing Training on Lake Hubert's Winds
  • Projectile Sports Instruction (Riflery, Trapshooting, and Archery)

These immersive trainings prioritize safety, skill-building, and camper engagement. Whether belaying a camper on the climbing wall or leading a sailing crew across the lake, our staff are ready to guide, coach, and encourage.

Leadership Training: Preparing Youth Mentors to Guide the Summer

Even before general orientation begins, our leadership staff—including division directors, program directors, and operations team members—arrive early for advanced leadership training. Their role is to create the tone, structure, and support systems that help every team member succeed.

This leadership group plays a vital role in mentoring newer staff, upholding camp traditions, and modeling best practices in every area of camp life. Their presence ensures that our values and standards are upheld daily.

Learning from Experts: Michael Brandwein and Proven Youth Leadership Training

For more than 20 years, we've welcomed internationally recognized camp expert Michael Brandwein to work directly with our staff. His sessions are a cornerstone of our training program, blending research-backed techniques with real-world strategies for mentoring youth.

His engaging, high-energy approach helps staff strengthen their communication, supervision, and leadership skills—transforming camp into a truly developmental experience for both campers and counselors.

Meeting ACA Camp Standards and State Health Requirements

We're proud that our training programs not only meet—but often exceed—industry expectations. In addition to youth development and safety training, our kitchen staff receive food safety certification, and our healthcare team undergoes training tailored to the unique needs of a residential camp setting.

From activity specialists to dining hall teams, everyone at camp is equipped with the tools and knowledge they need to contribute to a safe and successful summer.
