Camp Lincoln is steeped in tradition—from the unique way we gather for meals to the songs that echo across the athletic field during campfires—all inspired by the rich history of those who came before us. One tradition that perfectly embodies our spirit is the Camp Lincoln Firewatch Tradition.
The History of Firewatch at Camp Lincoln
Firewatch is more than just a name; it is a celebration of our shared past and our close-knit community. At its heart, Firewatch is about gathering around a fire throughout the night with cabinmates, fostering deep connections through storytelling and teamwork. This tradition also introduces campers to an age-old cooking method that has become a signature part of the Camp Lincoln experience. Under the vast, starry sky, the scent of smoldering wood and heated stones fills the air, creating memories that last long after summer ends.
The origins of Firewatch trace back to a pivotal moment in history. During World War II, counselor Felix Shular was stationed in the Pacific Theater, where he learned a unique cooking technique from the local Filipino community. He observed how smooth stones, heated by a steady fire, could be used to create an underground oven—a method that infused meals with a distinct, earthy flavor. After his service, Felix returned to Camp Lincoln and introduced this technique, laying the foundation for what would become one of the camp's most cherished traditions.
The Evolution of Firewatch Cooking
As the tradition evolved, so did its culinary legacy. Counselor Buck Bethel later expanded on Felix's teachings, introducing the whole hog roast—a delicious blend of the Southwest Asian cooking method and the foundational techniques passed down through generations of Camp Lincoln staff. The slow-cooked feast became a symbol of both innovation and respect for the past. Over time, the hog roast was replaced with Alaskan Hummingbird, a meal that continues to bring campers and staff together for a shared culinary experience under the stars.
