Like most people who work at camp, Patrick will wear many hats throughout the year. His main focus will be helping families learn about the benefits of summer camp and making parent communication as smooth as possible.

A Local Connection to Nisswa, Minnesota

Patrick is no stranger to the area—he grew up right here in Nisswa, Minnesota. While he didn’t attend Camp Lincoln as a camper, he has been involved in summer camps for years. His camp journey started in high school when he was nominated to attend Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camp. That experience sparked his love for the culture and community of summer camp, and he has been hooked ever since!

Years of Camp Experience

While attending the University of Minnesota, Patrick spent four summers at Camp Pinnacle in Western North Carolina, where he took on a variety of leadership roles. He started as a Cabin Counselor, guiding campers through their daily activities and helping them build confidence in a camp setting. He later became a Leadership Counselor, mentoring older campers as they took on more responsibility. As a Division Leader for Leadership Campers, he oversaw programs specifically designed for teens, helping them develop independence and leadership skills. Eventually, he stepped into the role of Assistant Program Director, where he helped organize and run camp-wide activities, ensuring that every camper had a fun and enriching experience. In addition to his time at Camp Pinnacle, Patrick also taught outdoor education in the winters and led outdoor adventure trips with an a teen adventure travel company, where he helped teens tackle challenges like canoeing the Colorado River and hiking in the Grand Canyon.

A Familiar Face in Town

On a fun note for summer staff and visiting families, If you’ve ever visited The Chocolate Ox in Nisswa, you might already know Patrick! He helped manage the popular candy and ice cream shop for several years. Balancing customer service, organization, and (most importantly) scooping ice cream prepared him well for the fast-paced world of summer camp!

Skills, Passions, and Certifications

Patrick has picked up a wide range of skills and certifications over the years, making him a great fit for camp. Some of his experience includes:

Planning and executing safe and substantive backpacking trips, an camp programming!

Teaching acting and performing arts, another one of his passions.

Serving as a Wilderness First Responder, and being a source of wilderess first aid knowledge

Caring for turtles, snakes, and other critters- safely!

When he’s not working with campers, you may find him performing in the twin cities theatre community. His energy, creativity, and love of adventure are sure to bring excitement to camp! We feel blessed and excited to introduce him to our campers and families this summer.

Meet Patrick This Winter!

We are so excited to have Patrick as part of the Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert team! If you’d like to meet him in person, you may catch him at one our movie showings this winter. And if you call the camp office, don’t be surprised if Patrick is the first one to pick up—he’s always happy to talk about camp and answer any questions you have!

Join Us in Welcoming Patrick!

We know Patrick will bring enthusiasm, leadership, and a passion for camp life to our community. At Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert, something deeper is happening. Kids are learning life skills—the kind that don’t just make them good campers, but strong, adaptable, and confident human beings.

The biggest lesson? How to handle challenges without crumbling.

Why We Need the Wind: The Story of the Biosphere Trees

Let’s talk trees for a second. Back in the ‘90s, scientists created Biosphere 2, a massive enclosed ecosystem. They planted trees inside, and the trees grew twice as fast as normal. Sounds great, right? Except… they all fell over. No storms. No wind. No resistance. And because of that, the trees never developed something called stress wood, the dense, strong fibers that help trees stand tall when life throws storms their way.

Kids aren’t much different. When they don’t experience challenges—when parents swoop in to soften every fall—they grow fast, but not strong. And then, when life inevitably gets tough, they struggle to stand.

At camp, kids get the wind—not the kind that knocks them down, but the kind that makes them stronger.

Redefining “Failure”: Resilience in Action

We don’t do “failure” at camp. We do learning.

Whether it’s falling off the wakeboard for the 17th time, burning their first attempt at cooking over a fire, or completely wiping out in a relay race, kids at camp learn that messing up is just part of getting better.

How do we make this lesson stick?

We share our own stories. Counselors and staff talk about times they struggled and what they learned from it.

We celebrate effort, not just success. No one laughs when a kid tips over in a kayak. Instead, they hear, “Try again—you almost had it!”

We encourage kids to talk about their struggles. When they hear from each other, they realize they’re not alone.

We use a challenge by choice philosophy. Kids will be empowered to set their own level of involvment at camp, this way kids are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones and take on challenges that are right for them. Learn more about our mission and core value.

By the end of camp, kids don’t just bounce back from challenges—they look at them differently. They stop fearing failure and start seeing it as part of the process.

A New Take on Resilience the Ultimate Life Skill at Camp: Antifragility & Thriving in Chaos

You’ve probably heard of resilience—it’s the ability to recover from setbacks. But what if we took it a step further? What if challenges didn’t just make kids bounce back, but actually made them stronger?

That’s antifragility.

Think about the science:

Your immune system gets stronger when exposed to germs.

Muscles build when they’re worked and stressed.

Bones get tougher when they experience pressure.

The human spirit grows when it is challenged. At camp, kids don’t just survive challenges—they thrive because of them. They leave not only more confident but also more adaptable.

Micro-Challenges That Build Stress Wood

Not every challenge needs to be earth-shattering. At camp, kids face micro-challenges every day—small but important experiences that stretch them just enough to build that stress wood:

Navigating new social situations. Making friends in a new place is huge! Campers learn to connect, collaborate, and sometimes navigate disagreements.

Trying (and failing at) new activities. Archery, climbing, sailing—nobody is perfect on day one, and that’s the whole point.

Being away from home. Homesickness is real, but overcoming it builds independence and confidence.

These little moments add up. By the end of camp, kids aren’t just taller from all that sunshine and fresh air—they’re stronger, mentally and emotionally.

Let Them Face the Wind

At some point, every kid is going to face struggles—maybe it’s a tough teacher, a rejection, a failure, or just a bad day. When that happens, do you want them to be like the trees in the biodome, collapsing at the first sign of trouble?

Or do you want them to stand tall, steady, and ready for whatever comes next?

At Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert, kids learn how to face the wind. And they don’t just survive it—they grow because of it.Top Life Skills Kids Learn at Camp.

Check out our parent overview for some frequently asked question when I comes to camp.

Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert head to the American Camp Association Conference and CODA CON

As the seasons begin to shift, our excitement is building at Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert! We are gearing up to attend the American Camp Association National Conference, an event that keeps us at the forefront of best practices and emerging trends in the camping world. This annual gathering—held this year in Dallas, Texas—is an invaluable opportunity for camp professionals to learn, connect, and grow, ensuring we continue providing the highest-quality experience for our campers and staff. We're particularly looking forward to the workshops on innovative outdoor education programs and mental health support for today's youth. Our leadership team will join over 1,000 camp professionals nationwide, allowing us to build meaningful connections and share successful strategies that have worked at camps nationwide. I can't wait to bring back fresh ideas and enhanced safety protocols that will enrich our upcoming summer season for your children.

Why the American Camp Association Conference Matters

One of the most exciting aspects of the ACA National Conference is the opportunity to learn from some of the most brilliant minds in the industry and youth development in general. Experts like Michael Brandwein, Dr. Debi Gilboa, Chris Thurber, and others will share their insights on leadership, youth development, mental health, and innovative programming. These thought leaders inspire us to refine our approach and implement new strategies that enhance our campers’ experiences. This year's theme is “Camp Cultivates Character” and will dive into a deep look at how summer camp programs create, build, and nurture positive cultures at camp and beyond.

But we don’t just attend the conference—we actively contribute! Our directors have had the honor of presenting, assisting in planning, and volunteering on ACA committees. We believe in giving back to the camping community by sharing our knowledge, experiences, and passion for youth development.

CODA Cohort Group

In addition to the ACA National Conference, we will also attend the Camp Owners and Directors Association (CODA) gathering, held right before the American Camp Association Conference. The CODA Cohort group is made up of private (non-agency or church-affiliated) camps in the industry. This event allows us to learn alongside our peers, share best practices, and gain insights from other camp professionals who understand the unique challenges and rewards of running a camp. We are also proud to serve on CODA committees, furthering our commitment to supporting and shaping the camping industry.

In addition to the National Conference and CODA, the ACA also hosts a number of regional conferences and online learning opportunities that we will take advantage of throughout the year. We look forward to the many opportunities ahead—to gain fresh perspectives, engage with fellow camp professionals, and bring back innovative ideas that will elevate our leadership and enrich the experience for our campers this summer. Stay tuned for updates from the conference—we can't wait to share what we learn!

ACA Accreditation

Another focus of the American Camp Association Conference is its ACA Accreditation Process. With 100s of specific standards ranging from communication to food safety to leadership training, the accreditation process is a vital aspect of the American Camp Association's drive to improve the summer camp industry continually. ACA accreditation is a badge of honor for us, which we have proudly maintained since 1948. It represents our commitment to safety, excellence, and continuous improvement. Our camp’s founding leaders played a pivotal role in the grassroots movement that helped shape the ACA into the esteemed organization it is today—their dedication to advancing the field of camping lives on in everything we do today. We are proud to continue to support and help drive the ACA's goal toward constant improvement within the camp industry.

Want to learn more about what makes our camp unique? One tradition that perfectly embodies our spirit is the Camp Lincoln Firewatch Tradition.

The History of Firewatch at Camp Lincoln

Firewatch is more than just a name; it is a celebration of our shared past and our close-knit community. At its heart, Firewatch is about gathering around a fire throughout the night with cabinmates, fostering deep connections through storytelling and teamwork. This tradition also introduces campers to an age-old cooking method that has become a signature part of the Camp Lincoln experience. Under the vast, starry sky, the scent of smoldering wood and heated stones fills the air, creating memories that last long after summer ends.

The origins of Firewatch trace back to a pivotal moment in history. During World War II, counselor Felix Shular was stationed in the Pacific Theater, where he learned a unique cooking technique from the local Filipino community. He observed how smooth stones, heated by a steady fire, could be used to create an underground oven—a method that infused meals with a distinct, earthy flavor. After his service, Felix returned to Camp Lincoln and introduced this technique, laying the foundation for what would become one of the camp’s most cherished traditions.

The Evolution of Firewatch Cooking

As the tradition evolved, so did its culinary legacy. Counselor Buck Bethel later expanded on Felix’s teachings, introducing the whole hog roast—a delicious blend of the Southwest Asian cooking method and the foundational techniques passed down through generations of Camp Lincoln staff. The slow-cooked feast became a symbol of both innovation and respect for the past. Over time, the hog roast was replaced with Alaskan Hummingbird, a meal that continues to bring campers and staff together for a shared culinary experience under the stars. Learn more about the Imu cooking method here!

Firewatch: A Celebration of Camp Lincoln’s Community

Each summer, the story of Firewatch is shared with the entire camp community, reminding everyone of the powerful bonds that define Camp Lincoln. Beyond its origins and cooking techniques, Firewatch serves as a symbol of unity, where the echoes of history blend seamlessly with the vibrancy of new experiences. It is a moment when campers can reflect, connect, and appreciate the traditions that make Camp Lincoln special.

More than just a method of cooking, the Camp Lincoln Firewatch Tradition is a living celebration of community, history, and the transformative power of shared experiences—uniting past and present under the soft glow of a night-time fire.

Experience the Magic of Firewatch

Firewatch is just one of the many unforgettable traditions that make Camp Lincoln a place where memories are made and friendships last a lifetime. But I’ve also noticed two common mistakes that well-meaning adults make when trying to help kids succeed: they overprotect them from every possible challenge, and they define success too narrowly. The good news? There’s an easy way to fix both—and it involves letting kids step outside their comfort zones and into places that encourage real growth (hint: like summer camp!).

Mistake #1: Overprotecting Kids from Life’s Little Bumps

It’s natural to want to shield kids from hardship. But sometimes, we go too far—eliminating every discomfort, micromanaging their schedules, and ensuring they never have to struggle. The result? They miss out on the small failures and problem-solving moments that build confidence and resilience.

In camp environments, I’ve seen firsthand how kids flourish when given independence. They navigate challenges like making new friends, learning to paddle a canoe, or figuring out how to survive without their phones for two whole weeks (a true feat!). These experiences teach problem-solving and perseverance—skills far more valuable than simply acing a math test. Evolving requires a balance between support and opportunities for self-sufficiency. Dr. Sarah Bishop has a wonderful article expanding on the importance of “preparing your child for the road, not the road for the child”. Read more here.

Mistake #2: Defining Success the Wrong Way

Too often, success is measured in trophies, grades, or prestigious college acceptances. But real success looks different for every kid. Some kids shine on stage, others in science labs, and some find their spark deep in the woods, building a fire for the first time.

One of the most important things caretakers can do for their kids is find an environment where they “shine”. Camp is one of those environment that does that—it helps kids discover what lights them up, away from the pressures of test scores, extracurricular overload, and dare I say it- parents.

Why Summer Camp is the Ultimate Confidence Booster

Camps like Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert are designed to be “shining places.” Here’s why:

Kids get to try new things. Whether it's archery, sailing, or drama, camp offers a variety of activities that help kids discover hidden talents.

They learn resilience. Overcoming homesickness, working through team challenges, and trying again after falling down on waterskiis—all these experiences build mental toughness.

They become part of a supportive community. Camp friendships are some of the strongest bonds kids form, helping them feel seen, accepted, and valued.

How Adults Can Encourage Growth Without the Stress

So how can you help kids build confidence and independence without creating a pressure cooker environment?

Let them explore. Instead of curating every experience, allow kids to try new things and figure out what they love.

Embrace failure as a learning tool. A scraped knee or a tough day isn’t the end of the world—it’s part of growing up.

Prioritize joy over pressure. When kids feel free to play, learn, and experiment without stress, they’re more likely to discover what truly excites them.

Give Kids the Gift of Independence

If you want kids to grow into confident, capable young adults, give them the opportunity to experience independence in a supportive environment. Summer camp is one of the best places for that to happen. At Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert, we see kids thrive every summer, developing life skills, friendships, and confidence that last a lifetime.

Ready to give your child an unforgettable summer? Learn more about our programs and how they help kids shine!

Keeping the Summer Camp Spirit Alive: Behind the Scenes at Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert

Year-Round Dedication to Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert

From left to right- Cody, Mike, Tasha, Jeff, Ryan- While campers are away, the maintenance team is hard at work! This fall and winter, our crew tackled a wide range of projects to keep Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert in top shape and fully prepared for summer.

From essential seasonal upkeep to big repair projects, our job is to make sure camp is safe, beautiful, and ready for fun the moment campers arrive.

The Heros of Seasonal Upkeep at Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert

As the seasons change, so do our priorities. During the colder months, we focus on:

Clearing the grounds of leaves, branches, and debris

Shutting down water systems and performing blowouts to prevent freezing

Servicing boats and equipment for winter storage

Plowing and shoveling snow to prevent structural damage from ice and heavy accumulation

Some of this winter’s biggest projects included repainting and repairing screens and screen doors on camper cabins, sanding and sealing bathroom stall doors at both camps, scraping old paint from cabins, and prepping buildings for spring painting. We also rebuilt the Swan pontoon boat and repaired sailboats so they’re ready to hit the water this summer. On top of that, we sanded and resealed dining hall tables, and cleared out brush and fallen trees.

Shifting for Summer Needs

When summer arrives, our role shifts to keeping the camps looking beautiful and running smoothly. That means mowing lawns, trimming trees, addressing unexpected repairs around cabins and common areas, and keeping boats and waterfront equipment in top condition. Every day brings something new—and that variety is part of what makes the job so rewarding.

Whether we’re tackling a long-term project or fixing something on the fly, the best part of the job is seeing the campers enjoy the spaces we’ve worked hard to maintain. Their energy and excitement make it all worth it, and it’s a daily reminder of why we love being part of the camp experience. Camper always remember to thank your friendly neighborhood maintenence team for all their hard work!

Unveiling New Adventures at Minnesota Summer Camps: Camp Lincoln 2025

Camp Lincoln is gearing up for one of its most thrilling summers yet! Whether it’s their first summer away or they’re a seasoned camper, it’s natural to wonder how you’ll stay connected while they’re off having adventures in the woods, on the lake, or around the campfire.

At Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert, we believe in the power of unplugging—but that doesn’t mean parents should feel left in the dark. Here’s what you need to know about staying informed, reassured, and connected while your child is at camp.

1. Camper Communication Policies

For the sake of safety, presence, and independence, campers do not have access to phones, tablets, or social media while they’re at camp. This is an intentional part of the experience. Being “unplugged” allows kids to build face-to-face friendships, learn problem-solving skills, and fully engage with the camp community.

But that doesn’t mean you’re cut off! We’ve built communication systems that help parents feel informed and involved—even from afar.

2. Daily Photo & Video Galleries

Our media team works hard every day to capture the spirit of camp life and give you a glimpse of what your camper is experiencing. We upload hundreds of photos daily to Bunk1.

We know that finding a photo of your child can feel like a game of "Where’s Waldo"—so we’re constantly improving our photo tagging and coverage system to ensure every camper is represented regularly. You can even upload a picture of your camper into Bunk1

Pro Tip: Set up your photo alerts and favorite your child’s photos to easily track them throughout the session.

3. Download the Bunk1 App

Using the code 25HUBERT camp families, grandparents, neighbors, friends, etc. can access daily photo uploads, and send unlimited Bunk Notes to their camper while at camp.

Bunk Notes: Bunk Notes are the fastest and easiest way to deliver camper mail. Families can send their camper letters, customized with photos, borders, puzzles, and more from the Family Portal on your Bunk1 account. These letters are sorted and delivered once daily to campers after lunch, if receieved by 9:00AM central standard time. Bunk Notes are unlimited!

Bunk Replies: Parents may purchase credits, to have stationary printed and attached to Bunk Notes that they send. Parents can print out fun stationery templates for their campers to write on prior to camp or attach them to their Bunk Notes while at camp in the App. The Bunk Replies have a space barcode that is specific to your camper, so that you receive their messages when the office scans them.

3. Letters from Home (and Camp Mail!)

There’s something magical about handwritten letters—especially at camp. We encourage parents to write letters or use our one-way email system to send a quick hello. Campers receive their mail at lunch or dinner, and it can be the highlight of their day.

Campers also write home a couple of times during their session. While you might not hear from them as often as you’d like, a postcard scribbled in messy handwriting often says more than a perfectly crafted text ever could.

Mail Tip: Send a letter a few days before camp starts so it arrives early in the session.

4. Camper Updates & Wellness Check-Ins

If your child visits the health center overnight or experiences something out of the ordinary, you’ll get a call from our nurse team. For general wellness, our counselors and directors are always monitoring camper well-being, and we’re happy to provide updates upon request.

Some age groups may also receive mid-session updates from counselors or unit heads to give you insight into how your camper is adjusting and thriving.

5. Trust the Growth Process- First Time Summer Camp Families

Perhaps the hardest (and most rewarding) part of camp—for both parents and children—is letting go. Trust that your camper is in a supportive environment, surrounded by role models, friends, and opportunities to grow.

If you ever feel uneasy, our team is just a phone call or email away. We’re here to support not just campers, but their families too.

How We Train Summer Camp Staff to Be Mentors, Leaders, and Safety Experts Before Campers Arrive

When you send your child to Camp Lincoln or Camp Lake Hubert, you’re not just signing them up for sunshine and s’mores (though there’s plenty of that, too). Behind the scenes—long before the first camper sets foot on our beautiful grounds—our seasonal staff are hard at work preparing to be the best mentors, activity leaders, and role models they can be.

How Summer Camp Staff Training Starts Before Campers Arrive

Each summer, our staff undergo a comprehensive 10-day orientation designed to prepare them for every aspect of the residential camp experience. This isn’t your average crash course. Our summer camp staff training digs deep into what it means to be a leader in a community living environment.

Staff learn to support homesick campers, uphold healthy boundaries, understand consent, and take on the responsibilities of being a trusted caregiver. More than just a checklist, this training is a commitment to the safety, development, and joy of every child.

A 10-Day Camp Counselor Training That Goes Beyond the Basics

At the heart of our orientation is a robust focus on camper well-being. Emergency procedures, mental health awareness, and child safety protocols form the foundation of our curriculum. Every team member becomes certified in First Aid and CPR through the American Heart Association, ensuring they’re fully prepared to handle the unexpected.

We believe that empowering staff with confidence and clarity sets the tone for a successful summer, both in and out of the cabin.

Summer Camp Safety Protocols and Certifications That Keep Kids Protected

Safety is non-negotiable at Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert. Our training aligns with the highest industry standards, including those established by the American Camp Association (ACA) and the Minnesota Department of Health. Staff are thoroughly trained in supervision, emergency response, and real-life camp scenarios—so when challenges arise, they know exactly how to respond.

This emphasis on proactive planning and expert-led safety training ensures a secure and enriching environment for every camper.

Activity-Specific Training Led by Certified Camp Instructors

Beyond general orientation, we elevate our preparation with activity-specific training led by certified professionals. These hands-on sessions ensure that staff aren’t just knowledgeable—they’re competent and confident in delivering high-quality programming.

Some of our standout specialty trainings include:

High and Low Ropes Course Certification

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training

Horseback Riding Instruction and Barn Safety

Waterski and Wakeboarding Instruction

Sailing Training on Lake Hubert’s Winds

Projectile Sports Instruction (Riflery, Trapshooting, and Archery)

These immersive trainings prioritize safety, skill-building, and camper engagement. Whether belaying a camper on the climbing wall or leading a sailing crew across the lake, our staff are ready to guide, coach, and encourage.

Leadership Training: Preparing Youth Mentors to Guide the Summer

Even before general orientation begins, our leadership staff—including division directors, program directors, and operations team members—arrive early for advanced leadership training. Their role is to create the tone, structure, and support systems that help every team member succeed.

This leadership group plays a vital role in mentoring newer staff, upholding camp traditions, and modeling best practices in every area of camp life. Their presence ensures that our values and standards are upheld daily.

Learning from Experts: Michael Brandwein and Proven Youth Leadership Training

For more than 20 years, we’ve welcomed internationally recognized camp expert Michael Brandwein to work directly with our staff. His sessions are a cornerstone of our training program, blending research-backed techniques with real-world strategies for mentoring youth.

His engaging, high-energy approach helps staff strengthen their communication, supervision, and leadership skills—transforming camp into a truly developmental experience for both campers and counselors.

Meeting ACA Camp Standards and State Health Requirements

We’re proud that our training programs not only meet—but often exceed—industry expectations. In addition to youth development and safety training, our kitchen staff receive food safety certification, and our healthcare team undergoes training tailored to the unique needs of a residential camp setting.

From activity specialists to dining hall teams, everyone at camp is equipped with the tools and knowledge they need to contribute to a safe and successful summer.

Why Comprehensive Summer Camp Staff Training Matters to Us

At Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert, our staff are the heartbeat of the camper experience. Investing in comprehensive camp counselor training is an investment in every child’s growth, confidence, and happiness.

By the time campers arrive, our team is prepared to lead with compassion, creativity, and professionalism. We don’t just prepare for summer—we train to make it unforgettable.

The American Summer Camp Experience: Why International Summer Camp Staff Make Camps Stronger

Why International Summer Camp Staff Make Camps Stronger

Summer camps provide a unique experience for children. Whether campers are spending the day on the lake, sailing, swimming, or waterskiing, or heading off to athletic fields, courts, and trails for games and activities on land, the temperatures stay consistently comfortable — warm enough for nonstop fun.

On days when temperatures climb or when summer rain rolls through, camp is fully prepared. Campers might head to the lake for free swim or enjoy engaging indoor activities and spaces, making sure the weather never gets in the way of a great day. This balance of flexibility, sunshine, and water makes it easy to spend more time outside, more time with friends, and more time making the most of summer.

MYTH #2: The mosquitoes are as big as birds.

FACT: Bugs may visit camp — but they do not get invited to stay.

Campers quickly learn the simple routines that make outdoor living easy, like using good old bug spray before heading out to the next activity. This visit marked the beginning of a journey that would define his life. Growing up in Kentucky, Andre always planned to work in the medical field. But his first year in college at DePauw University, located in Indiana, would lead him on a different path. Andre met Ruggs Cote at college, whose grandfather founded Camp Lincoln in 1909. Ruggs encouraged Andre to work summers with him and what started as a summer experience quickly evolved into a lifelong commitment. Four summers spent as a college student transformed into a calling and then a career. By 2000, Andre stepped into a full-time assistant role and over the years, he grew into the position he holds today: Director of Camp Lincoln.

A Leader Who Listens Knows How to Lead

Andre's responsibilities go beyond the joy of summer activities. He oversees many crucial aspects of camp life. His role includes:

Camper enrollment and recruitment

Staff hiring and supervision

Medical coordination for onsite summer team

Financial and budget planning with camp owner, Cote Hospitality

Managing alumni relations and programming

Consistent communication with parents and grandparents

Yet, when asked about Camp Lincoln's success, Andre does not highlight logistics. Instead, he emphasizes the importance of listening. He welcomes feedback from parents, staff members and campers alike. He attends industry conferences to learn new ideas. Andre believes growth comes from curiosity and openness. His question to the staff members is simple: “What do you want the campers to say about you when you leave?” His hope is they will describe him as fair, responsible, and someone who listens without prejudice. This humility sets a positive tone for the entire camp.

Shaped by Values, Leading with Identity

Andre's leadership is influenced by his upbringing. His parents instilled values that go beyond skin color or social class. They taught him to value character, education and faith. As a Black camp director in a field where representation has been limited, Andre recognizes the significance of his role. For many parents and campers, especially boys of color, seeing him in charge makes a difference that is not always articulated. He hopes his leadership role shows young men of color that they can be a leader, too.

He has served on the National Board for the American Camp Association and is currently on the Camp Owners and Directors Association National Board. Andre remains active in efforts to expand access and leadership in the camp community. He believes in camp programs, working to ensure more children of color experience camp. At Camp Lincoln, “community” is not just a value; it is something he actively cultivates. Andre views camp as a space where boys can be themselves. They can sing loudly, try crafts and laugh together. Here, affluent kids and those needing financial assistance share experiences, making status irrelevant. “No one cares about that here,” Andre insists. “They just get to be boys.”

Leadership & Mentorship That Lasts a Lifetime

One of the greatest privileges of Andre’s role is time. He observes boys grow from campers into leaders. The transformation is profound as he witnesses shy campers becoming confident speakers. The restless boys learn discipline. Teenagers discover resilience through effort and a willingness to learn.

Andre recalls a lesson from industry leader Jack Weiner about the impact a mentor can have, even for a short season. If he can make a difference in just one camper's life, Andre considers it a success. He has seen how camp reshapes perspectives. Young men who once took community for granted learn its value. Camp becomes a place for practicing respect and kindness. Resilience builds through small moments: following directions, trying again after failure, speaking in front of groups, and fulfilling cabin responsibilities. These character-forming repetitions happen daily, and Andre is there every step of the way.

The Quiet Moments Matter Most

Despite overseeing budgets and operations, Andre treasures simple moments. He enjoys passing time between activities. Eating meals with campers brings him joy. He loves sitting in on cabin activities and observing boys lead activities at the campfires and during moments like “apple toss." He prefers to sit back and watch, not to control, but to witness growth and friendship. He sees confidence building and boys becoming comfortable in their skin.

For Andre, Camp Lincoln is more than a summer program. It is a vibrant community. For me, it also brings to mind nearly a century of summers at Camp Lake Hubert for Girls and the role camp plays in helping girls grow into confident, capable women.

As a male director entrusted with leading Camp Lake Hubert for many years, I’ve always felt a deep responsibility to create an environment where girls can discover their strength, develop leadership, and build confidence that lasts long after the summer ends. All these small moments and guidance helps shape Camp Lake Hubert campers confidence and courage.

My goal has always been that the Camp Lake Hubert experience becomes something more than just a summer camp. It becomes a place where girls learn the lessons that help shape the women they will become.

Camp Lake Hubert is A Place to Become Brave

Small Moments and Guidance Helps Campers become confident leaders

There is something truly transformative about an all-girls environment. Without many of the pressures and comparisons that often follow girls during the school year—especially in today’s electronic world—camp gives girls the freedom to try something new. They can stretch themselves, experiment, and even stumble without fear of embarrassment.

These moments may seem small: trying a new activity, raising a hand to lead a song for the first time, or speaking up in a cabin discussion.

But confidence rarely comes from simply being told you are capable. It grows when you attempt something that feels difficult and discover that you can do it. At Camp Lake Hubert, girls are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones. They are supported by counselors and staff who model courage and kindness and surrounded by peers who cheer each other on. In that environment, courage spreads. Becoming more capable becomes contagious.

Camp Lake Hubert is Where Leadership Is Learned by Living It

Leadership at Camp Lake Hubert isn’t taught through lectures. It’s lived every day. From the youngest campers helping with cabin responsibilities to older campers mentoring those who follow behind them, responsibility is woven into the rhythm of camp life.

Girls see leadership modeled in counselors who guide with empathy and strength. They see it in traditions that honor character, growth, and community. Because leadership is visible and accessible, it feels attainable. When the time comes for a camper to take on a leadership role herself, she is ready—because she has been practicing all along. Small leadership steps each day gradually build the confidence that allows girls to see themselves as leaders.

Camp Lake Hubert offers a Community that Builds Belonging

Confidence thrives where belonging exists. At Camp Lake Hubert, girls become part of something enduring—a community grounded in shared traditions, mutual respect, and genuine friendship.

Around campfires, during evening programs, and in quiet cabin conversations late at night, girls form connections that make them feel secure and supported. In that environment they are more willing to step forward, try new roles, speak up, and encourage others.

Camp Lake Hubert becomes more than a place. It becomes a second home. It’s a place where girls are known for who they are, not how they compare. That sense of belonging is powerful and gives girls the confidence to take risks while knowing they are never doing it alone.

Camp Lake Hubert Builds Independence That Lasts a Lifetime

The transformation that happens at camp often appears in subtle ways. At Camp Lake Hubert, girls learn to manage their time, navigate friendships, resolve small conflicts, and take ownership of their choices. They build resilience when a new skill doesn’t come easily. They practice communication when sharing a cabin with peers. They develop responsibility by contributing to a community bigger than themselves.

And when camp ends, they bring those abilities home with them. Parents often tell us they notice meaningful changes: A daughter who speaks more confidently; a child who takes initiative without being asked; a young woman who carries herself with greater assurance. Camp Lake Hubert doesn’t change who a girl is. It strengthens the qualities already within her.

Camp Lake Hubert is More Than Just a Summer Camp

Over the years, I’ve watched countless campers arrive unsure of themselves during the first days of camp. By the final day, many stand taller, speak more confidently, and trust their ability to be more fully who they are. The transformation is rarely loud or dramatic. It’s steady, authentic, and lasting. Camp Lake Hubert is filled with joy, adventure, and unforgettable memories. But it is also something deeper. It is a place where girls practice independence, learn to lead with empathy, and discover resilience, courage, and confidence within themselves.

During Women’s History Month, I am reminded that the women who shape our future often begin their journeys in places where they are encouraged to grow, lead, and believe in themselves. For many girls, Camp Lake Hubert is one of those places. And that is why it will always be more than just a summer camp.`

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Leadership Training for Camp Lake Hubert Campers

At Camp Lake Hubert, we offer Leadership Training (LT) Program provides a unique and empowering opportunity for young women, beginning in the 10th grade and continuing into 11th grade, to cultivate essential leadership skills that will set them up for success in all areas of life. Counselors gather groups along winding paths while the sounds of songs and excited conversations fill the air. For Stacey Dyer, moments like these capture the spirit of camp—a place where confidence grows, friendships form, and young people discover who they are.

For Stacey, summer camp has always been more than a place—it has been a lifelong calling. Growing up in a camp family at Sanborn Western Camps in Colorado, Stacey experienced firsthand the powerful role camp can play in shaping young people. Surrounded by mountains, community, and a spirit of independence, she learned early on that summer camp is about much more than outdoor activities. It is about confidence, resilience, and discovering one’s potential.

Stacey attended Camp Lake Hubert in Nisswa, Minnesota at age 12 for the first time, an experience that would ultimately shape the direction of her life. “At 12 years old, I had some say in choosing which camp I wanted to attend, but that didn’t mean I was excited about going,” Stacey recalls with a laugh. “In fact, I was pretty sure my parents were making a huge mistake sending me to Camp Lake Hubert. Like a lot of kids, I felt nervous about leaving home and stepping into something unfamiliar. Little did I know that camp would become one of the most important experiences in my life. Very quickly it felt like home. The friendships, the traditions, and the sense of belonging stayed with me long after that first summer—and ultimately shaped the path my life would take.”

Creating a Safe Space to Build Confident at Camp Lake Hubert

That early experience also shaped how Stacey approaches leadership today, a story we wanted to share as part of Women's History Month. Remembering what it felt like to arrive at camp unsure of what to expect helps her remain especially attentive to new campers who may feel the same way. She understands that behind every nervous arrival is the potential for a life-changing experience. By creating an environment where girls feel welcomed, supported, and encouraged to try new things, she hopes to give today’s campers the same sense of belonging that first transformed her own experience at Camp Lake Hubert.

Today, Stacey serves as the Director of Camp Lake Hubert, where she has helped lead and steward the camp for more than 25 years. Her connection to the camp spans decades—as a camper, a LT, a staff member, a parent, and now a leader responsible for carrying forward its nearly century-long tradition. “It’s really about creating an environment where girls feel safe to try something new, challenge themselves, and discover what they’re capable of,” she says. “Camp gives young people the freedom to grow in ways that are hard to replicate anywhere else.”

A Nearly 100-Year Legacy of Empowering Girls at Camp Lake Hubert

Founded in 1927, Camp Lake Hubert was created to provide girls with opportunities for adventure, independence, and leadership at a time when those experiences were often reserved for boys. Located alongside Camp Lincoln, the two camps were built on the belief that outdoor experiences, community living, and supportive mentorship help young people develop confidence and character.

The legacy of Camp Lake Hubert is also a story of strong leadership. From its earliest days, the camp has been guided by those who believed deeply in the potential of girls to lead, explore, and shape their own futures. That tradition continues today, as each generation of campers is encouraged to develop confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of self.

For many families, a summer camp experience offers something increasingly rare in today’s world: a place where young people can build confidence, develop independence, and form meaningful friendships away from the distractions of everyday life. At Camp Lake Hubert, this philosophy has guided the camp for nearly a century. Through outdoor adventure, creative expression, and a strong sense of community, campers gain skills that help them grow not only during the summer, but throughout their lives.

Each summer, campers arrive from across the country and around the world to participate in a wide range of activities that encourage both personal growth and teamwork. Campers might spend the morning sailing across the lake, learning to ride horses, practicing archery, or exploring creative arts. In the afternoon they might paddle a canoe, work on outdoor skills, rehearse a performance, or participate in team sports with friends.

While the activities themselves are memorable, Stacey believes the deeper value of camp lies in what those experiences help young people discover about themselves. “A camper might arrive feeling unsure or hesitant,” she explains. “By the end of the summer, she’s trying something she never imagined doing, supporting a friend, or stepping forward to lead a group. That growth is what camp is really about.”

Leadership Built on Care and Intention

As Director of Camp Lake Hubert, Stacey oversees many aspects of camp life—from program planning and staff leadership to food service, safety, and daily operations. Yet her leadership philosophy focuses less on logistics and more on community. She believes strong leadership begins with creating an environment built on trust, respect, and care.

Stacey often points to three values that guide her leadership approach:

Integrity – Trust is built when actions consistently match words.

Courage – Leadership sometimes requires making difficult decisions or having honest conversations.

Empathy – Understanding others and recognizing their perspectives creates stronger relationships and a more inclusive environment.

“These values aren’t just ideas we talk about,” Stacey says. “They are things we try to demonstrate every day in how we treat people and how we solve challenges together.” One aspect of the Camp Lake Hubert experience that reinforces these values is the camp’s phone-free environment. Without smartphones or social media, campers are able to focus fully on their surroundings and the people around them.

Many campers arrive feeling uncertain about disconnecting from their devices. Yet by the end of the summer, they often express gratitude for the chance to step away from the pressures of online life. “Camp gives them space to be present,” Stacey explains. “They build friendships face-to-face, spend time outdoors, and discover that connection doesn’t require a screen.”

The Moments That Make Camp Magical

For Stacey, some of the most meaningful moments of camp life happen in simple, everyday experiences. It might be hearing laughter echo across the lake during a swim period, songs drifting along the camp paths in the evening, or watching a group of campers celebrate a friend’s accomplishment.

One of Stacey’s favorite traditions is camp skit night, when campers work together to create and perform short skits for the entire community. At first, many campers feel nervous about performing in front of others. But as they rehearse together and support one another, that nervousness often transforms into excitement and pride. “You can see confidence building right in front of you,” Stacey says. “A camper who may have been shy at the beginning of the summer suddenly realizes she can stand up in front of her peers and succeed.”

Preparing the Next Generation of Leaders at Camp Lake Hubert

As campers grow older, Camp Lake Hubert provides opportunities to take on greater responsibility and leadership through programs designed specifically for high school students. One of these is the Leadership Training (LT) Program, which invites older campers to deepen their connection to the camp community while developing leadership and mentorship skills.

Through guided experiences, collaborative challenges, and hands-on learning, participants explore what it means to lead with integrity and responsibility. They also begin to understand the impact they can have as role models for younger campers. “The goal is not just to teach leadership skills,” Stacey explains. “It’s to help young women recognize that their voice matters and that they can contribute meaningfully to their communities.”

A Place That Shapes Lives

Stacey still looks forward to the start of camp every summer. Each season brings a new generation of campers discovering friendships, independence, and confidence in ways that can shape their futures.

“For many girls, camp is one of the first places where they realize they are capable of more than they thought,” Stacey says. “Watching that growth happen year after year is what makes this work so meaningful.”As Camp Lake Hubert approaches its 100th anniversary, Stacey remains focused on preserving the traditions that have shaped generations while continuing to create an environment where girls can grow, lead, and thrive. “Camp has a remarkable way of helping young people discover who they are,” she says. “And when girls believe in themselves, there’s truly no limit to what they can achieve.”

Interested in learning more about Camp Lake Hubert? Discover more here.

Understanding the Essential Life Skills Learned at Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert

10 Life Skills Learned at Summer Camp – Camp Lincoln for Boys and Camp Lake Hubert for Girls

What if a few weeks of summer could help your child become more confident, independent, resilient, and socially skilled? For generations, parents have discovered that summer camp is one of the most powerful environments for helping kids grow—not just physically, but emotionally and socially as well. At Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert, campers spend their days climbing new heights, learning outdoor skills, sailing across clear lakes, and building friendships that often last a lifetime. But beneath all the fun, something deeper is happening. Campers are developing real-life skills that help them succeed in school, relationships, leadership roles and adulthood. Below are the 10 most important life skills children learn at summer camp and how Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert help their campers build them every day.

1. Appreciation for Nature

Spending time outdoors has a powerful impact on kids. Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert surround campers with lakes, wildlife, and woods that encourage curiosity and exploration. Through activities like canoeing, fishing, outdoor adventures, and overnight camping trips, campers develop respect for the natural world, environmental awareness, and a love for being outdoors.

2. Communication and Social Skills

Today’s kids spend more time than ever on screens. Camp helps them strengthen the skills that matter most in real-life relationships. Living in a cabin community teaches campers how to communicate clearly, listen to others, resolve disagreements, and respect different personalities. These daily interactions build emotional intelligence and help campers become stronger communicators.

3. Confidence

Few things build confidence like accomplishing something you once thought was impossible. Campers experience these moments all the time, for example, when they reach the top of the climbing wall or when they learn to sail independently. Each success reinforces a powerful belief: “I can do hard things.” This mindset becomes one of the most valuable takeaways from camp.

4. Friendship and Belonging

Perhaps the most meaningful thing campers gain is a deep sense of belonging. Living, laughing, and growing together creates friendships that often last far beyond the summer. Camp teaches kids how to build meaningful relationships, support their peers, and celebrate each other's successes. These friendships become some of the most cherished memories campers carry with them.

5. Independence

One of the greatest benefits of summer camp is the opportunity for kids to grow more independent. Without parents managing every detail of their day, campers learn to manage their routines, keep track of their belongings, make decisions on their own, and advocate for themselves. From choosing activities to organizing their personal areas during cabin clean-up, campers gain confidence in their ability to take care of themselves. Many parents say they notice the difference the moment their child returns home.

6. Leadership

Leadership opportunities happen naturally at camp. Older campers mentor younger ones. Cabinmates encourage each other during activities. Campers step up to lead games, songs, and traditions. Through these experiences, campers begin to understand that leadership is about lifting others up and living the Golden Rule. Leadership is not about having the loudest voice in the room.

7. Perseverance and Resilience

Trying something new can be intimidating for kids, but camp provides the perfect environment to face those fears in a supportive setting. Completing the high ropes course or performing in front of the entire camp teaches kids an important lesson: growth happens outside your comfort zone. When campers fail and try again, they develop resilience that helps them tackle challenges long after summer ends.

8. Problem-Solving Skills

Camp naturally creates opportunities for kids to think critically and solve problems. How do you build a fire after it rains? How do you help your team complete the Acid River Challenge? Campers constantly practice thinking creatively, adapting, and making decisions, which are incredibly valuable skills they use in school and beyond.

9. Responsibility

Camp communities thrive when everyone contributes. Campers learn responsibility by keeping their cabin organized, taking care of equipment, supporting their cabinmates, and following safety guidelines. These daily responsibilities help children understand that their actions impact others and that they play a significant role in the community.

10. Teamwork

Many of the most memorable moments at camp happen when campers work together. Whether they are completing a low ropes course challenge or collaborating during cabin activities, campers quickly learn that success often depends on working as a team. Camp helps kids discover that supporting others and contributing to a group effort can be incredibly rewarding.

Why Summer Camp Matters More Than Ever

In a world filled with busy schedules, technology, and constant pressure, camp offers something increasingly rare for kids: the chance to grow, explore, and discover who they are. At Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert, campers do not just learn activities. There are full days and always big laughs. The sound of the bell gets campers moving from one activity to the next. But what makes all of that possible is the work we don’t always see. Behind every smooth-running day at Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert is a dedicated maintenance team working quietly and consistently to keep both camps operating at its best.

Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert Property

Spanning more than 800 acres across both camps, our property includes over 90 buildings, nearly 200 toilets, countless docks, trails, roads, and program and special event spaces. It’s considered a “small city in the woods," one that requires constant care, attention and special expertise.

Each year begins with an enormous undertaking:

Preparing camp for the summer season

Systems are carefully brought back online

Water lines are checked and tested

Pipes are inspected

Every building is walked through, top to bottom

Smoke detectors are tested

Porch lights are repaired

Screens are replaced so cabins remain comfortable and welcoming

The simple things like working sinks, functioning bathrooms, lights that turn on and doors that close properly are what allow camp life to run smoothly. And none of it happens by accident. Safety is a top priority. Across both properties steps are reinforced, railings are secured and fire safety systems are maintained. Beyond the buildings, the work continues as roads are cleared, trails are maintained, fallen branches are removed, docks are reinforced and boats are repaired. Cabins and gathering spaces are painted and refreshed, while vehicles and equipment are serviced to keep everything moving safely and efficiently. Every program area depends on this foundation.

The kitchen relies on fully functioning ovens, coolers, plumbing and electrical systems to serve hundreds of meals each day. Activity areas require safe, well-maintained structures and equipment. And when something needs attention, the maintenance team responds quickly, often before anyone else even notices.

Steady, year-round work handled with care and pride

Our campers come from over 40 states and 12 countries, forming a vibrant and diverse community. With more than 40 land and water activities spread across 120+ acres of program space, there’s something here for everyone. But none of it would be possible without the infrastructure that supports it all.

When camp feels safe, beautiful, and comfortable, it’s because a dedicated group of people is paying attention to every detail. Their work allows everyone else to focus on what truly matters: the fun, the friendships and the moments that make camp unforgettable.

So as we soak up the sun and enjoy all that both camps have to offer, we pause to say thank you. Thank you to our maintenance team—for the early mornings, the long days and the work that often goes unseen. Thank you for caring for this place and the people in it. Thank you for helping keep both camps a safe, beautiful and welcoming home away from home for campers, staff, alumni and guests.

Learn more here about our camps, history, legacy, summer schedules and more.

Why Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert Are The Perfect Cell Phone-Free Camps

Why Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert Are Cell Phone-Free Camps

In today’s always-connected world, the idea of sending your child to a cell phone-free summer camp can feel like a big leap. For many families, it’s the first time their child spends an extended period away from home. Along with excitement can come a mix of anticipation, pride and maybe even a few nerves.

At Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert, we’ve seen something remarkable happen year after year: campers arrive a little unsure of themselves and leave more confident, independent and connected to others. That growth doesn’t happen by accident. One of the most important ingredients for a successful camp experience is the partnership between parents and camp leadership. When families and camp staff work together with shared goals, campers have the support they need to truly thrive. This happens when parents and camp leadership partner to create the best camp experience for their children.

A Shared Goal: Helping Kids Grow

Parents and camp staff ultimately want the same things for children. We want them to grow into confident, kind, capable young people who are willing to try new things and build meaningful friendships.

Summer camp creates a unique environment where those qualities can flourish. Away from the routines and expectations of school and home, campers have the opportunity to explore new interests and discover strengths they didn’t know they had. Maybe it’s standing up on water skis for the first time, learning to sail across the lake, climbing higher than they ever thought possible on the climbing wall, or performing in front of their cabin group. Each of these moments builds confidence and resilience. When parents and camp share the goal of encouraging growth and independence, campers feel supported both at home and at camp.

Preparing Campers Before the Summer Begins

A positive camp experience often begins long before opening day. Parents play a powerful role in helping children prepare for the adventure ahead. Check out this page for helpful information including preparing your child for camp.

One of the most helpful things families can do is talk about camp with excitement and confidence. Sharing stories about activities, friendships, and traditions can help build anticipation and reassure first-time campers. It’s also helpful to encourage independence in small ways before the summer begins. Packing together, organizing personal belongings, and practicing overnight stays away from home can help campers feel ready for the experience.

Parents can also talk openly about the idea that camp might include moments of challenge. Missing home for a little while or trying something new can feel uncomfortable at first but those are often the very moments that lead to the greatest growth. With encouragement from home, campers arrive feeling ready to embrace the adventure.

Trusting the Camp Process

Residential camp is thoughtfully designed to help children develop independence, confidence and strong social skills. At Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert, experienced counselors and staff create an environment where campers are supported every step of the way.

Our staff are trained to help campers navigate everything from trying new activities to working through homesickness or friendship challenges. These moments are normal and often become valuable opportunities for growth. Sometimes the most powerful learning happens when campers are given the chance to solve small problems on their own with caring guidance from counselors rather than immediate help from parents. Whether it’s figuring out how to organize their bunk space or working through a disagreement with a cabin mate, these experiences help campers develop resilience and confidence. When parents trust the process and encourage their children to engage fully in camp life, campers are more likely to embrace the independence that camp provides.

Parents and Camp Leadership Team Create Powerful Results

When parents and camp staff work together as partners, the results are powerful. Campers often return home with a deeper sense of independence. They’ve learned to navigate friendships, try new activities, and overcome small challenges. They’ve discovered that they are capable of more than they realized.

Many parents notice changes right away as their campers exhibit greater confidence, stronger social skills, and a willingness to step outside their comfort zones. Just as importantly, campers come home with memories of laughter, friendships, campfires, and adventures that stay with them for years.

Staying Connected in Healthy Ways

Even though campers are busy building friendships and enjoying activities, families remain an important part of the experience. Letters and notes from home can be a meaningful way to stay connected.

A helpful tip for parents is to keep letters upbeat and encouraging. Sharing excitement about what campers might be learning or asking about new friends and favorite activities keeps the focus on the experience they are having at camp. For example, a message like “We can’t wait to hear about your sailing adventures!” helps reinforce enthusiasm and curiosity. These kinds of notes remind campers that their families are proud of them for trying something new. This supportive communication helps campers stay engaged and confident during their time at camp.

A Partnership That Makes Camp More Meaningful

At its heart, summer camp is about helping young people grow into their best selves. That journey is strongest when parents and camp work together with shared trust and communication. Families provide the foundation of encouragement and support. Camp builds on that foundation by offering an environment where children can explore, challenge themselves, and discover new strengths. When that partnership is in place, campers don’t just have a fun summer, they have an experience that shapes their confidence and character for years to come. And that’s when camp truly becomes meaningful. Learn more about our summer camps here.

A Day in the Life at Camp Lincoln for Boys: Where Every Moment Matters

Raising the Flag, Rest and Relaxation and Nightime Downtime at Camp Lincoln for Boys

What does a typical day at Camp Lincoln for Boys really look like? It often comes with a mix of excitement, pride qeand a little bit of worry (for both kids and parents).

As a therapist who works with young people and families, and as someone who deeply values the growth that happens at camp, I want to offer some gentle guidance to help make this transition feel smoother and supportive for everyone involved

1. Start the Conversion Early

Children do best when they know what to expect. Begin talking about camp in the weeks leading up to it, what a typical day might look like, the kinds of activities they’ll try, and the friendships they’ll build. This information can be found here for Camp Lincoln and here for Camp Lake Hubert

It’s important to keep the tone positive, but also realistic. You might say, “There will be so many fun moments, and there might also be times that feel new or a little uncomfortable, that’s part of trying something new.” This helps build trust and emotional readiness.

2. Build Independence in Small, Manageable Ways

Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert are incredible environments for building independence, and a little practice beforehand goes a long way.

In the weeks before camp, encourage your child to “practice” routines without you: getting ready for bed, picking out clothes, showering and brushing teeth etc. Talk about what your child should do if they need something; it’s important that campers learn to advocate for themselves.

3. Let Your Child Be Part of the Process

One of the best ways to reduce anxiety is to increase a sense of control.

Invite your child to help pack for camp. Let them choose a few meaningful comfort items—a favorite sweatshirt, family photos, or a small stuffed animal. As you go through the packing list together, you’re not just preparing their bag, you’re helping them mentally prepare for the experience.

4. Practice Being Away

If this is your child’s first extended time away from home, try building up to it. Sleepovers with friends or nights at a relative’s house can help them get used to being in a different environment.

Even small experiences of separation help build confidence: “I’ve done this before, I can do it again.”

5. Normalize Homesickness

Homesickness is one of the most common concerns and also one of the most misunderstood.

Let your child know: it’s okay to miss home. That feeling can come and go, and it doesn’t mean they are not having fun.”

You can also offer simple coping tools:

Taking a few deep breaths

Looking at photos from home

Staying engaged in activities and routines

6. Don’t make promises about picking up your child early if homesickness becomes an issue.

These statements set campers up for failure and send a message that you have no confidence in your child’s ability to cope with adversity. Tell your child, “If you are feeling sad or homesick, talk to your counselor. At Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert, our staff are incredibly skilled at supporting campers through these moments.

For parents, sending your child to camp for the first time is also a big milestone and can stir up big emotions.

7. Keep Goodbyes Short, Warm, and Confident

Drop-off can be emotional: shorter, confident goodbyes tend to help children adjust more easily.

Try to communicate your belief in them:
“I know you can do this. I’m so excited for you.”

Even if you’re feeling emotional inside (which is completely understandable), your calm confidence becomes their anchor.

8. Trust the Process!

Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert have decades of experience helping children grow, connect, and thrive. The counselors and staff are deeply attuned to what kids need, whether that’s encouragement, structure, or a little extra support.

Reminding your child that they can go to their counselors for anything helps them feel safe and supported.

9. Take Care of Yourself as well!

It’s okay to feel a mix of pride, excitement, and even a little loss of having them not at home. Try to give yourself the same compassion you’re offering your child. And trust that this experience is helping them build confidence, resilience, and a stronger sense of self.

10. Celebrate the Growth

Camp is more than just a summer activity, it’s a powerful opportunity for growth.

You might say to your child:
“This is something new and brave. I’m so proud of you for trying it.”

Because it is not just about camp, but learning they can step into something new and come out stronger on the other side.

Final Thoughts:

The first summer at Camp Lincoln or Camp Lake Hubert is the beginning of something truly meaningful. There is also so much joy, connection and growth waiting for your child. With a little preparation, a lot of support, and trust in the process, you’re setting them up for a summer they’ll carry with them long after camp ends.

Debbie Locketz, LICSW, is a Clinical Social Worker and founder of a private mental health practice in Minneapolis, MN.
